Alaska is a big place, you need to take time to enjoy it.
We are on day 26 of our Alaskan adventure, having traveled from Washington through British Columbia and the Yukon to get to Alaska. We have traveled a fair portion of the Alcan Highway, of WWII fame from Dawson Creek, BC to Tok, AK and will do the rest on the way home. For those of you that have not been or it has been awhile since you have been on this route, we want to assure you that it is not what it was, rough, tire popping, windshield breaking, rig busting road of the past. Today it is quite tame, paved from beginning to end with some road construction along the way. You do want to pay heed to the orange flags warning of frost heaves and other dips, bumps and potholes you may encounter along the way. It is still a long, long drive, through some of the most stunning wilderness in the world. Mountains, rivers, forests, wildlife and historic towns abound. Even though we are taking our time to explore this summer, we find that a life time will not be enough to see this great land! We will do our best to see and do as much as we can.
Our hint for today is plan ahead, do some reading about the area, stop at visitor information centers, ask locals what there is to do and see. When we stop in an area, we like to base camp for several days and use our tow car to check out the area. Now that many not sound different from other travels you may have taken, but Alaska is different. First, Alaska is a lot bigger than you think. Many of the numbered highways aren’t even paved, slow down, there is more to see then you anticipated and everything takes longer then you may calculate. Be a Boy Scout, you know, be prepared, when you go into the “bush”, take a few necessities, spare tire, snacks, “TP”, you know the important things. By the by, your cell phone will most likely be good only as a paperweight, no cell service. By using your tow car for exploring you may save on fuel, a bonus in this day and age.
