We have started our homeward swing.
We are on day 82 of our ramblings through this Great North Country. As all adventures this one is on the homeward swing. That is not to say there is nothing left to do. Before we started this trip we had drawn up a tentative itinerary, nothing hard and fast just a basic idea. There were a few times that were scheduled so that we could meet up with someone or do something that mandated a reservation but most of the time we had a direction and a “soft” number of days for each area we wanted to visit. This gave us the flexibility to add things to our schedule or shorten our stay as we went, like the time we met a fellow “Mad Mike” and after talking with him for just a short while, he offered us a stay in his trapper cabin, far up the Canol Road in the Yukon, well that’s another story for the book. Something else, we noticed, it took the pressure off. That need to do it “now” just was not there! We watched others with a “tight” schedule as they rushed about. We heard them complain about the distances they had to cover, complain about the weather holding them back and even complaining that there were too many trees to see, they told us of all the flat tires and broken windshields they had along the way. We felt none of that. Our basic plan was to cover about 150 miles a day, with two extra days a week. This way we had the flexibility to spend more or less time in each area, add a side trip or drop something had did not work out.
OK, we know, not everyone has this much time to spend on the road. When planning a trip like this, take in consideration the distance and time. If you are limited in time, don’t try to do it all. Choose the most important things you want to do and a region that you want to see. We have decided that they have a warped since of humor up here, most of what they call “highways” aren’t even paved?
